World Population Day 2019: It’s significance and theme

Celebrated on 11 July every year, World Population Day is announced to make people aware of the developing problems due to excess population. There is an urgent need for family planning.

Some of the population issue we are facing currently are family planning, gender equality, child marriage, human rights, baby’s health, etc. Here you will come across some points about how you can take measures to control the population and contribute towards a better world!

World Population Day was established in 1989 by the Governing Council of the United National Development Programme because an outgrowth of Five Billion was observed on 11 July 1987.

Since then it is necessary to generate awareness among the public about the population issues and the impact they have on development and environment.

Celebrated internationally every year on 11 July, organizations participate and draw attention to the major issues related to the population of the world on this day. Activities such as seminar, discussion, educational sessions, public contest, slogans, workshops, debates, songs, etc take place. Even TV channels, news channels, radio broadcast various programs related to population and the importance of family planning happen.

The theme of this year’s World Population Day is not specific. Every year UN Council decides the theme of World Population Day but in 2019 no specific theme is decided. UN Council calls for global attention to the unfinished business of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development.
